Topic: Absolute Poker

After the cheating scandal on Absolute Poker, I hear they did not lose a lot of customers? I have an old account there, is it safe? Is it fair? I know they are probably not after my fifty bucks but why are do many people still playing there?

Re: Absolute Poker

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about poker, but I do know something about software development.  As I understand it, the cheating was done by an in-house programmer (albeit a consultant.)  The company has to have security measures in place not just on the players, but also on the development team (code reviews, pair programming, etc) to make sure that the code base is secure.  If a programmer is sufficiently skilled and has free access to the code base, this kind of problem is definitely possible.

I think if anything this will be good for online poker in general, because attention will be given to an issue where, at least at Absolute, security was lacking.

If they have truly addressed the problem then playing there is no more risky than playing anywhere else.  Of course thats easy for me to say, as I don't have money there.

Re: Absolute Poker

I think that Fats is right - in the end this will be good for online poker as sites tighten up and double check their security measures.

But while I agree that Absolute will probably be towing the line and will be a safer site, I wasn't particularly impressed with their slow reaction to this lastest breach.  After "an investigation", they denied that there was any cheating going on and that the player in question just played with an unorthodox style.  They assured users that there was no way anyone could see players' hole cards.  All these things turned out to be untrue.  Either they're bad investigators or they just wanted this to go away without anyone knowing.  I'm not particularly interested in whether they were just supid or plain evil - I don't want to play on a site that is either one.

Re: Absolute Poker

Surprisingly the numbers at Absolute did not drop very much and seem to have recovered to their pre-scandal level. Are poker players just gullible or too lazy to switch to another site?

Re: Absolute Poker

I read a lot about this breach and it seems to me the worst part was that Absolute tried to cover it up or at least we very reluctant to comment on what was clearly a hack of their site. I mean in the age of the internet did they really think they could deny what was so obvious?

Re: Absolute Poker

I never had an account at Absolute but since they are owned by the same people as Ultimate Bet, where I do have an account, I am not likely to be putting any more money into UB.

Re: Absolute Poker

I know you can transfer money between Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, so I am going to guess they have the same owners.

Take anything I say with a grain of salt, remember I like to play Badugi!

Re: Absolute Poker

I have a Absolute account and I am fairly sure they did try to cover up the hack. But it looks like nearly everyone is still playing there. I have not logged in a over a month and it's not like I have a big balance but I didn't like the way they handled the PR on the whole mess, they were a lot more concerned about their public image than they were up their customers.

Re: Absolute Poker

The way I understood this is that someone who was not an employee but a contractor of some kind was seeing the cards and passing information to a player in a big buy-in tournament. Anyone want to tell me why they were so obvious?

Re: Absolute Poker

Well it appears that Absolute has completely ducked the brick here and they are getting away with this screw-up with no consequences.

Re: Absolute Poker

Well the Absolute Poker scandal seems to have blown over and they did not go out of business and apparently lost only those players who don't like to be cheated. Yes, they gave back the money but my lingering question would be.... How many other times did this happen, when the cheaters weren't so blatant?

Re: Absolute Poker

I for one, closed my Absolute account. I am sure they will miss my hundred bucks (OK $85) and I never played in those events where the insiders cheated but who knows how much of that was going on at all levels.  What I really want to say to all my buddies who said: "These sites make too much money to cheat." I TOLD YOU SO!!!
